Senior Researcher in Detection and Surveillance of Foodborne Pathogenic Microorganisms and Antimicrobial Resistance

The National Food institute (DTU Food) invites applications for a position as Senior Researcher. The position is available from 1 July 2013 or soon after.
Responsibilities and tasks
The main responsibility of the applicant is to perform and communicate research within the area of foodborne microbiology in a national as well as global context and to contribute to the consultancy, training and education performed by the division. In addition, the applicant shall contribute to the overall activities in the division eg. by providing scientific support to colleagues within the diagnostic area. It is expected that the applicant will be able to develop the research area and build up research activities that from a food safety perspective can support the growth within the food production industry as well as the development of the basic for the food safety management by authorities and industry. This will include being a driving force in research application and other types of fund raising.
The research should focus on:
  • Development, implementation and evaluation of molecular methods for detection, quantification and characterization of microorganism in close cooperation with industries and authorities
  • Molecular epidemiology of food and waterborne incl. evaluation and implementation of sequence based/’omics’ technologies for outbreak investigation and source attribution
  • International and national occurrence, characterization, and spread of food and waterborne / zoonotic bacteria as well as antimicrobial resistant bacteria of importance for human and animal health in a ‘one health perspective’
QualificationsThe applicant should preferably hold a PhD in microbiology in a relevant area of foodborne infections, zoonosis, or antimicrobial resistance. The applicant should be able to document solid research activity at post doc level within one or more of these areas.
The applicant should have an all-round experience based on a solid microbiological background and preferable experience in epidemiology. Additionally, experience with diagnostic technologies, quality assurance, and interdisciplinary knowledge of food borne pathogens, molecular microbiology and antimicrobial resistance.
Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:
  • scientific production and research potential at international level
  • innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
  • the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation
Furthermore consideration will be given to:
  • The ability to produce, present and utilize research results into reports, presentations and scientific articles
  • Experience with microbiology, molecular typing and epidemiology
  • Qualifications within the assignment(s) that are associated with the position
  • The ability to collaborate and coordinate research and development activities
  • High ability to attract funding to the research area
  • An open-minded, outgoing, motivated, and enthusiastic personality
  • The ability to write and communicate orally in fluent English
  • An all-round experience basis, preferably including project management and national and international networking
  • The ability to contribute to development of the division’s overall profile
