Limit of tenure: 24 months
The role holder will be appointed for two years to develop and assess new ways to integrate buildings, transport and energy infrastructure in dense urban areas through intelligent and future-proof redevelopment and management programmes.
The role is attached to the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC). For more information please visit: http://www-smartinfrastructure.eng.cam.ac.uk/
The work will be focused on developing and implementing a new methodology based on Real Options Analysis, a method that addresses upfront the issues of high cost, complexity and market uncertainty in dense urban areas. The research tasks will include survey and modelling of redevelopment needs, in-depth analysis of two major sites in central London, stochastic modelling of alternative growth trajectories of the sites and surrounding precincts, and robust assessment of dynamic redevelopment plans that balance commitments today with flexibility in the future. The research aims to develop a generalisable methodology that can be used in practice by major infrastructure scheme promoters in capturing those costs and benefits that are missed by current assessment procedures when evaluating engineering, construction and urban design options.
The researcher needs to have a keen interest in understanding and modelling the construction process and long-term use of transport and energy infrastructure. The candidate is expected to have an understanding of the planning, design and construction process, and excellent skills in constructing experimental models using standard tools such as Matlab, Python, C++ and GIS packages. The role would suit someone who can master new data and modelling techniques on the job, and actively collaborate with research colleagues in the CSIC as well as specialists developing new standards for Smart Infrastructure and Smart Cities at BSI UK.
Candidates who have completed a PhD or obtained equivalent research experience in a relevant academic or professional field would be considered for appointment at Research Associate level. Candidates with a first degree, with less research experience, could be considered for appointment at Research Assistant level, though they would still require the skills detailed above. The researcher will be based at the Department of Architecture, at the address below.
