The College of Science is a cutting edge research and teaching environment with state of the art facilities across all five departments (Biosciences, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics and Physics). The College is looking to expand in a number of areas, the first being Biosciences to strengthen and strategically grow areas of excellence. The College welcomes applications for permanent posts at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the field of Ecological Biosciences, reference AC00422. This is a continuation of an exciting growth phase for the department which has already recently appointed 5 positions.
The department has benefited from external funding totalling more than £6 million in the last year, allowing a suite of research officer appointments and further enhancement of excellent aquatic laboratory and seagoing facilities and is also currently building a unique new lab to visualize and analyse animal movement and behaviours. Recent departmental research highlights include climate change impacts in marine environments, roadmapping of microalgal biotechnologies, aquaculture/environment interactions, and elucidating the behavioural ecology of animal movement.
We are happy to consider applications from any area of ecological biosciences, but would particularly welcome applications that complement our core research activities in aquatic trophic dynamics (led by Professor Kevin J Flynn) within the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research http://www.aquaculturewales.com/, and in animal ecology utilising smart tag technologies (led by Professor Rory Wilson)http://www.swan.ac.uk/biosci/research/smart/smartpeople/. The positions could also support the arena of invertebrate pest management (with Professor Tariq Butt) while submissions from those interested in general invertebrate or fungal biology are also welcome.
We have particular interests in researchers with experience of working with marine protists (microalgae, microzooplankton, mixotrophs), invertebrates (crustaceans and bivalves) and fish, terrestrial invertebrates (especially insects and ticks) and air-breathing vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles). However, as part of a multidisciplinary College of Science http://www.swansea.ac.uk/science/, we particularly welcome applications from researchers who can work innovatively at the interface between our core Departmental biosciences interests and mathematics, computing, engineering, geography, and medicine. Modelling, statistical, semiochemical and molecular-skills are particularly welcome.
Applicants should specify the level of appointment they wish to apply for and their particular area of expertise.
Applicants will have a PhD in a Science or Engineering subject area and provide recent evidence of appropriate academic publication success and of professional engagement in their subject area. They will have a strong publication record in high impact innovative publications (“quality that is internationally excellent, or even world-leading, in terms of originality, significance and rigour”) with at least three such papers since 2008. Specific requirements of the level and skills required can be viewed within the job description on our website.
Informal enquiries may be made to the Head of College, Professor Steve Wilks s.p.wilks@swansea.ac.uk or directly Head of Department, Professor Wilson at r.p.wilson@swansea.ac.uk
This post will close at midnight Monday 25th March 2013. Applicants will find full job details together with the online application link when clicking on the Apply button below.
We are an equal opportunity employer aiming for diversity in our workforce.
